Born and raised in Nigeria, 46 year old Edoamaowo Udeme Akpan is a correspondent with Scroll Report who doubles as a Social Worker because of her passion for defending the rights of women and children. A graduate of English Language from the University of Abuja, Nigeria, a Diploma holder from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism.
Trained on Investigative Journalism Fellowship by the RNTC in the Netherlands. She has participated in investigating stories on disinformation on COVID-19 by the ICIR/ African Resilience Network/IWPR. Her work on Female Genital Mutilation (FGM) was featured on IWPR on International Women’s day 2022.
The only journalist to receive an award as a Vaccine Ambassador by the Nigerian Primary Health Care and Development Agency (NPHCDA) for her written stories on vaccine 2019, also recognized by EU-UN UNICEF Spotlight initiative as one of the women journalists breaking the boundaries to end violence against women and girls.
She has also lent her voice to Amnesty International in its journal, NIGERIA: A HARROWING JOURNEY, Access to justice for women and girls survivors of rape.
She was recognized and interviewed by BBCs Samantha Simmonds through the Media Circle NGO where spoke alongside women from Bangladesh, Afghanistan Pakistan on violence against
women and girls. During COVID-19 lockdown in 2020, she founded Network Against Domestic
Violence Foundation (NADVF) on Facebook to enable her reach out to SGBV victims/survivors as the case had tripled in her country.
The group later registered as an NGO currently has over 5,000 followers on Facebook and has intervened in over 315 cases, some for referrals while few got individual interventions, she hopes for a better justice system for victims and survivors. She is married with a child.
