The AWJP is an initiative dedicated to empowering women journalists by providing them with the skills and resources they need to create content that raises awareness of under-reported issues affecting women and makes a business case for sustained gender reporting supported by the International Centre for Journalists (ICFJ).
We are hiring an experienced Junior Data Analyst to help us keep growing. You will be working with a team of journalists, mentors and data analysts in six African countries (Ghana, Kenya, Nigeria, Senegal, Tanzania, Uganda and South Africa) who are producing smart, data-based storytelling. This position is based in Kenya nad is fully remote.
Responsibilities for Junior Data Analyst
- Interpret data, analyze results using statistical techniques and provide ongoing reports
- Develop and implement databases, data collection systems, data analytics and other strategies that optimize statistical efficiency and quality
- Acquire data from primary or secondary data sources and maintain databases/data systems
- Identify, analyze, and interpret trends or patterns in complex data sets
- Assess data quality from the journalists’ draft articles before publication
- Identify, gather and compile data resources and information for stories, brainstorm sessions and media assets.
- Identify, gather, compile and analyse data resources from reports and other credible data sources for possible stories
- Source data as requested to feed into the journalists’ stories
- Assess data quality from the journalists’ draft articles before publication
- Maintain an organized archive of resources for future stories as well as data collected for previous stories.
- Scrape, analyse and report insights from datasets, reports and research papers as required.
- Critically review literature accompanying data sourced to check for relevance
- Locate and define new process improvement opportunities
Qualifications for Junior Data Analyst
- Proven working experience as a Junior Data Analyst or Business Junior Data Analyst
- Technical expertise in data models, database design development, data mining and segmentation techniques
- Strong knowledge of and experience with reporting packages (Business Objects etc), databases (SQL etc), programming (XML, Javascript, or ETL frameworks)
- Knowledge of statistics and experience using statistical packages for analyzing datasets (Excel, SPSS, SAS etc)
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze, and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy
- Fluency in English is expected.
